Break – 1994 Select 1

I have already opened a box of 1994 Select 1, so there is no reason to do a full preview.  I bought this particular box back when I was still interested in getting the full base set. I am no longer all about base sets, but I still have the box. Here it is. The box is just like the previous one except for the serial number – box #16 of 24 in case #897 of 4950. The cost was $12.76 ($3.76 auction plus $9.00 shipping).

The last box didn’t have many surprises except for a large number of duplicate cards (and even triplicates and quadruplicates).  The collation was terrible.  What did this box yield?

Stats

base cards: 145 of 210 – 69.0% complete (141 duplicates/triplicates/quadruplicates)
Crown Contenders (1:24): 2 of 10 – 20%
Rookie Surge Series 1 (1:48): 0 of 9 – 0%
Select Salute (1:360): 0 of 2 – 0%

Some base cards with backs

Here are just a couple base cards chosen for no particular reason. The first is Derek Bell.

The second is Todd Hundley.

Inserts and parallels

I picked up two Crown Contenders (Bonds and Gonzalez). That beat the odds. I didn’t get any other inserts in the box.

Here is the Bonds card.

Here is the Gonzalez card.

Comments

  • collation
Same crappy collation. The 1994 Select 2 box I broke was great, but I guess the series 1 boxes were uniformly dogs. I don’t mind getting duplicates, but three and four of several cards is a lot. The two series 1 boxes that I broke were remarkably similar (similarly bad) in terms of the card distribution.
  • inserts
I was pretty fortunate to pull two Crown Contenders cards. I suspect that was an accident since both came in the same pack. Still, I’m not complaining.
  • card condition
These cards were stuck together like glue. That wouldn’t have been a problem back in 1994. Turn the clock forward by over 15 years and just about any box might have this problem. If you look at the base card scans, the cards show some signs of losing their surface. It shows up as white specks. The damage shows up best on the back of the Gonzalez Crown Contenders card. This may have been the worst card in the box. Some cards didn’t have any damage. I can’t complain. I’m sure that card manufacturers don’t plan on these cards being in their original wrapping for over a decade.

Conclusion

As I say that the collation of 1994 Select 1 was terrible, I must admit that the collation seems remarkably consistent. Both of my series 1 boxes were close to identical. Most surprising is how Select so quickly fixed their collation problem for series 2. Otherwise, most of what I had to say about this set was covered in the previous break post. There is no reason to re-hash it here.
