Break – 1998 Pinnacle

Stats

base cards: 169 of 200 – 84.5% complete (6 duplicates)
Museum Collection (1:9): 2 of 100 – 20%
Spellbound (1:17): 1 of 50 – 2%
Hit It Here (1:17): 1 of 10 – 10%
EPIX (1:19): 1 of 6 – 16.7%
Artist’s Proofs (1:39): 0 of 100 – 0% (I was hoping, but no)
Press Plates (1:1,250): 0 of 1,600 – 0% (no surprise)

Some base cards with back variations

Here are fronts of a typical base card and the three subsets, Rookies, Field of Vision, and Goin’ Jake.

The back variations, home, away, and full season stats, do not exactly stand out from one another.

Inserts and parallels

Museum Collection inserts – PP10 Tony Womack and PP28 Jeff Bagwell

Spellbound insert – S50 Tony Gwynn Y

Hit It Here insert – H5 Barry Bonds

EPIX insert – E19 Mike Piazza Play Orange

Other cards

Every pack contained an promotion for a special glass Pinnacle card holder – a Pinnacle Icon – available at the bargain price of $39.99 plus shipping. Another blog, The Priceless Pursuit, recently noted finding one of these cards in 1997 Score packs. A single pack in the box contained a collector survey in place of the card holder promotion.

Comments

  • collation
Collation was pretty strong with just six duplicates in 180 cards. Ignoring the inserts (five cards), the box contained 175 base cards. A totally random selection of cards would have given about 116 different cards. To get 169 different cards shows that Pinnacle probably went to some effort to minimize duplication. On the other hand, Old School Breaks broke a 1998 Pinnacle box back in 2008 which had a more random collation. The box had 20 10-card packs and contained 193 base cards. Random collation should have given 123 different cards. Old School Breaks pulled 120, just about right.
  • horizontal poses
All the poses in the set are vertical except for a handful of cards that are clustered in the middle of the set – cards 73 through 90.  One would expect the poses to be mixed around a bit, but it is not so in this set.
  • back variations
The back variations are subtle and pointless. If I wanted to chase after the back variations, I would be particularly disappointed. Five of the six duplicates were of cards that have back variations. All five of the duplicates were also identical on the back. How is that possible?!? Not all the back varieties seem to be equally likely. In this box, the season stats appeared about twice as frequently as the home and away backs. Specifically, 65 backs had full season stats, while home and away were each on 34 backs.
  • inserts
The number of inserts found in this box was right on the money based on the stated insertion rates.

Conclusion

This was my first ever box to open. More inserts would have been nice, but this probably was a pretty decent box for 1998. The cards themselves look great. The design is clean and uncluttered. The inserts are way busier. Although the details do not show in the scans, the Hit It Here and Spellbound inserts have very cool reflective mirrors. The Museum Collection inserts are a mess and not unlike 1997 Flair – lots of gray and sparkles. The circles in the EPIX set may trigger seizures.
